Here at Armuchee, there are several AP and honors classes offered to students who think they are up for the challenge. These classes include more difficult and in depth topics that are not offered to regular classes. Due to more work given to the students, some students think that these classes are too much and just cause more stress. However, other students find the challenge more fun and do not feel that these classes put too much stress on them.
Freshman Jack Thacker, who takes multiple honors classes and AP human geography, enjoys the challenge. He said, “I enjoy taking these classes because they push me to think critically and work harder,” However, he admits the workload can be stressful. He said, “There are times when the amount of work feels like too much, especially when multiple classes have big assignments due at the same time,” Despite this, he believes that classes are valuable, adding, “They prepare us for college and teach us better study habits.”
For some students, the motivation to take rigorous courses comes from a desire to push themselves. Rocio Espinal, who takes Honors Advanced Grammar and Composition and Honors World History, values the challenge. She said, “I take these classes because I want to challenge myself and learn as much as possible,” While she enjoys these classes, she also recognizes the pressure. She said, “It’s a lot of work, and sometimes it gets stressful, especially when we have tests in multiple classes on the same day,” Still, she believes the experience is worthwhile, seeing the courses to help her develop critical skills, she said, “It helps develop better time management skills.”
Both students agree that these courses have improved their understanding of material and study skills. Thacker said, “The way we go in-depth forces you to really learn, not just skim the surface,” Espinal shared a similar view. She said, “Even though they can be tough, I am glad that I take them.” While the workload can be demanding, many students feel the long-term benefits outweigh the stress that may be felt while taking the course
Ultimately, the decision to take AP and honors classes depends on the student. Some enjoy the challenge, while others struggle with the work. Regardless, these courses teach valuable lessons in discipline, time management, and critical thinking-skills that will benefit students in high school and beyond.
