The One-Act program at Armuchee High School is going to be performing Snow White and the Queen of Mean as their act this fall. One-Act is a play that has only one act, and is often performed in a competition. These plays may have 2 or more scenes and are often performed in 20-40 minutes. And One-Act is officially a part of GHSA. One-Act members are working hard to perfect their lines this year.
Mrs. Williams, the director of the One-Act, said she decided to pick the play Snow White and the Queen of Mean as their act because she felt as if “it provided a large cast to get more students involved in One-Act.” Mrs. William’s said that her favorite thing about One-Act and directing it is, “the students involved,” and how they’re fun and, “truly care for one another.” She also believes that with the talent that these students have they can “most certainly win the region!” She said if they won, “We would celebrate by planning a banquet to celebrate all of our many seniors.”
Students in the One-Act are all loving and kind towards one another. The environment backstage is a very open and non-judgmental zone for these students. “We all get along really well, and you don’t have to worry about being judged,” said Abby Trotter, a junior. Everyone is friends and are comfortable with each other. Most people’s favorite thing about being in the program is the people included. “My favorite thing about being in One-Act is being with the people and the experiences I have with them,” said Taylor Jhonston, a sophomore.
Students who are a part of this play wanted to join to have something to do and because it seemed fun. Azan Chaudary said he decided to participate, “Because it is my senior year, and I wanted to do something fun.” Since everyone is friends with each other, another reason students have joined is to have fun with their friends. Some people are trying it for the first time, while others have been doing drama for years! Like Amanda Floyd, a senior, who has been doing it since her sophomore year. She enjoys being in drama because she enjoys performing for people.
Although being in this One-Act is fun and all, it can also be stressful. These students have to memorize their lines and be able to go in front of a huge crowd and not mess up. Outside of practice, they practice lines in their head and read over them to memorize them. This does not make them 100% confident though. Going on stage could make someone possibly forget their lines. Taylor Johnston, a sophomore, said, “I get very nervous because if I mess up, we will not be able to go to state.”
Although it is stressful, our drama program can definitely win the competition! Abby Trotter said, “With the schools that are in our region this year, I think we have a pretty good chance of winning.” If they win Region, Taylor Johnston said she will take everyone out to eat and Amanda Floyd said she will buy ice cream cake for everyone to celebrate! Even though the students in One-Act can win state, they still need more support. Many students have said that to improve the program, they just need more fundraisers to get money. If they are able to get more money to improve the drama program, it could be better than ever!
