Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)
This program is mainly run by Armuchee Senior, Sophie Thacker. She is participating in the leadership position for this program. Other Huddle Leaders include Grace Fellows and Taylor Burns. The advisors include Mrs. Everett and Mrs. Barwick. FCA holds its meetings weekly every Thursday morning before school at 7:30 in the colosseum. FCA is open and available to everybody, this includes non-athletes despite the title of the program which may imply that it’s only for student athletes. FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) is a program at Armuchee High School where those who are interested and want to learn more about Christianity all gather together to learn how to improve or begin their religious journey with Jesus. “All students are welcome, regardless of their grade, academic performance, or sports,” said Mrs. Everett.
One small step the Huddle Leaders are taking to improve the program is by promoting FCA weekly on the FCA instagram page (@armucheefca) that is mainly run by Sophie. This page is used to encourage people to show up to the meetings. The program is also currently in search of more Huddle Leaders to help out and lead every grade. “Since the majority of the middle school is at the high school now, FCA definitely needs some younger students as huddle leaders,” said Sophie.
The roles in FCA for those involved in the program do not really differentiate from each other. “The whole FCA team only includes ten huddle leaders. Everyone takes turns between speaking or leading the groups, praying, and guiding the games we play during opening,” said Grace. The games lead for opening consist of four corners, ships and sailors, and many more. For students who only attend FCA and are not a part of the Huddle Leaders, they only mainly attend the weekly meetings on Thursdays. Huddle Leaders, on the other hand, hold separate meetings regularly. There are also events outside of school such as Fields of Faith. This event is an annual event where all of the schools around Floyd County meet up together. “Additionally, William Pethel and I attend monthly FCA training with other students around the county,” said Sophie.
The main moral of the FCA program is to help students see a whole new perspective of a life benefited by Jesus. “Fellowship with christian friends is encouraging, and encouragement everyone gets from meetings is definitely a great component of this program. FCA and its Huddle Leaders do their best to help people see a whole new perspective of the world altered by Jesus,” said Mrs. Everett. This point is brought across by the Huddle Leaders utilizing their knowledge of the Bible. Without FCA, the school could lack more unity and cooperation since this program is used to help bring many people together and can even help people create new friendships through Jesus. “ FCA brings all students together and allows them to have a community within the FCA group. Everyone can relate to one another on a level they maybe wouldn’t have been able to reach without fca,” said Mrs. Barwick. This teamwork component can be used to help improve Armuchee and the school’s lessons of appreciating and loving one another.
The FCA program was founded in 1954 and will hopefully carry on to last a long time. “I truly am very confident that this program will be something that doesn’t end. As long as the public schools allow it, I hope and believe that FCA will always remain to be a group,” said Sophie. FCA is a very unique school program compared to other programs who use basic school subjects instead of religion or lifestyle teachings. “In a world where you are often encouraged not to confess to your faith or religion, FCA allows everyone a safe place to share their faith and be encouraged by other believers,” said Mrs. Barwick. This program has definitely helped benefit the lives of many students at Armuchee and will hopefully continue to do so for as long as it lasts.
