The 2023 Armuchee Indians softball team is in a year of rebuilding. This past school year, nine seniors graduated from high school. In addition to these seniors leaving, the Indians have two new coaches: Coach Jonathan Cook and Coach Jonathan Cannon. The Indians have had a good history of beating Mt. Zion and Model twice: two teams that had defeated them in past seasons.

Sara Harris, the Indian’s only senior, is a pitcher and center fielder. Sarah also has experience from past seasons. “It’s been a lot more relaxed in a way, but it’s also been a lot more serious,” said Harris. “The environment and pressure level of the team has changed due to the number of younger players and experience,” said Harris.

Since the softball team is young, the freshmen filled a significant role. The Indian’s catcher was Aubri Dostart, a freshman, who was nervous but excited to play behind the plate. “I play catcher because my dad always pushed me to be a catcher, and I’ve always wanted to catch for him,” said Dostart. She does feel like she improved since the beginning of this season. Dostart said, “My call times have gone a lot quicker. My hitting has also gotten a little better.” She recently hit her first home run during the game against Darlington on August 30th.

With the Indian’s season being a rebuilding season, they competed against their competitors and figured out their strengths and weaknesses. Bella Duck, a sophomore, has been with the team since her 8th grade year and has been the Indian’s starter for 3rd base ever since. Duck said, “One of my weaknesses is that I get in my head a lot. I would say my strength is that I’m very uplifting.”

Since it is their first year, most freshmen either start or are a utility. Emily Garrison is the backup for Gabi Stinson at first base. She watches the opposing team’s strengths. “So far, Bowdon has been our toughest competitor. They came prepared to play the game at their best,” Garrison said.

In addition to rebuilding the team, their ability also comes into consideration. Coach Christina Arnold, an assistant coach, has helped the players grow in their abilities. “Overall the softball team this year has lots of ability. Most of the team is young, but once we figure it out and put it all together, it’ll be amazing to see what we can accomplish. I’m very excited to see what the future holds for everyone on the team,” said Arnold.
