Mrs. Melanie Floyd was recently awarded the prestigious “Teacher of the Year” award for the 2024-2025 school year. This award is given once a year to those who demonstrate a respect for their students and a commitment to their education. Mrs. Floyd has clearly demonstrated both of these qualities to the highest degree. Mrs. Floyd teaches AP Seminar, Dual Enrollment English 1101, and Honors Literature and Composition II. This year is actually the first time in twenty years that she has not taught American Literature. This is Mrs. Floyd’s 23rd year teaching and her 21st year at Armuchee. When asked what her favorite thing about teaching is, Mrs. Floyd said, “Building a positive relationship with my students. Helping them to grow as students and people and seeing them succeed after high school.”

One of Mrs. Floyd’s greatest strengths is her ability to connect with her students on both an educational and personal level. When asked what her favorite aspect of teaching was, Mrs. Floyd said, “Building a positive relationship with my students. Helping them to grow as students and people, and seeing them succeed after high school.” Many of her students cite Mrs. Floyd’s use of witty humor and terrible jokes, usually at her own expense, as what makes her classroom a more sociable environment. By maintaining this positive relationship with her students, Mrs. Floyd insures that her classroom has a constant friendly atmosphere.
Lacey William’s, senior, said, “Her class is never boring even if we’re doing something boring like reading a poem, she finds a way to make it entertaining.” Mrs. Floyd excels at balancing the crucial academic work with more fun, engaging assignments. One of her most famous projects is the Gothic movie project where each individual student or pair picks a Gothic movie based off of a book to write about and create a tri-fold poster that they must present. When asked what her favorite assignment to give out was, Mrs. Floyd said, “any of the creative writing assignments.”
Mrs. Floyd was inspired by her 7th-grade English teacher. “She was the first teacher I ever had who truly engaged the students in their learning and genuinely cared about each of her pupils,” said Mrs. Floyd. Since then, Mrs. Floyd has been motivated to cultivate an engaging and creative curriculum that allows each and every one of her students to shine. Just about any student of her’s will say that they view Mrs. Floyd as both a teacher and a friend. Emma Peschel said, “she is such a good teacher that relates to her kids and connects with us more than just in the classroom.” The Armuchee community congratulates Mrs. Floyd as she continues to build a legacy of excitement for the opportunities that lie ahead.
