Armuchee High School’s drama department performed their spring play production of Little Women on April 18th and 19th at AHS in the auditorium. The actors and crew members involved in the show worked since January to put together a beautiful performance for the Armuchee community.
Ms. Williams is the proud director of the play, and she was very excited for the students to show off their skills. She has been involved with AHS drama for two years, and this is her fourth time directing a show. Williams was new to the theater community when she began teaching. She said, “I didn’t know anything about acting or directing when I started, and everyday, I learn something new.” Not only does she enjoy seeing herself grow in the director’s aspect of theater, but she also appreciates the hard work that each student brings to the drama department. She said, “I like seeing the students grow and become better actors.” Jackson Pledger, senior, can also vouch for the growth he has seen in his peers. He said, “My favorite memory is all of us being together in the difficult times as well as the good times.” He explained that these difficult times include getting to know each character. “You have to become your character and give an emotion that you might not normally give,” he said. Each cast member has learned how to correctly portray their given character on stage.
Pledger played the role of Laurie, the charismatic boy next door who becomes a close friend, and later a love interest, of the March sisters, especially Jo. He has also been the prince in Snow White and the Queen of Mean, as well as Augustus Gustav in Night Night, Roger Roger. His favorite part of the show is the ending because it becomes a full resolution to the girls becoming women. Abby Drew Trotter, junior, has learned a few things from the characters in Little Women. She said, “All of the characters have taught me how to be my own person.” She explained how each of the main characters has to learn how to be independent and that has shown her how to be confident in herself. Trotter has been in one other AHS production, playing the Good Queen in Snow White and the Queen of Mean. She played Meg, the oldest daughter, in the spring play. Her favorite part is Act 2. She said, “You can really see Meg taking over as the mother.” This is important to Meg’s character because both of the parents of the main characters are gone because of the war. The audience sees Meg’s independence and transformation into a woman when she begins to take over. Little Women is about four girls who overcome obstacles in order to mature and be successful in society.
The students who participated in the play were excited to perform for the community. They had been rehearsing since January and made a remarkable representation on stage. Bravo to the AHS Theater Department!
