Art class is a way for people to show what they love through their art. One thing that lots of artists make is ceramics. Ceramics are things that people make with clay by hand, then they glaze it to make the final product. Students in Mrs. Dougherty’s art class have been making some ceramics in the past month. From pinch pots to tic tac toe boards. Everyone who made a piece said they had a fun time making it. Angie Khoja, freshman, said, “I really liked making my piece and I would definitely do it again.” Her excitement shows just how much this type of art brings people joy.
Everyone who made their ceramics made their own unique design. Some had a similar design, while some took full creative freedom while making theirs. Ella Dehart, freshman, said, “I made a pinch pot with a heart in it.”. Even a little touch like a heart makes a difference in the final product. She was creative and added something special to top her piece off.
Evey Flagello, freshman, said, “I made a board with a leaf shape and a Tic Tac Toe board engraved on it. Then for the pieces I made them ladybugs and bumblebees.”
Her piece was different from the pinch pots. Angie Khoja said, “I made a pink pinch pot. It was amazing!”
Art takes time, and everyone has different ways of making their pieces. Evey Flagello said, “I made my tic tac toe pieces by rolling them out into balls and glazed the colors. For my board our class all made a slab and I cut a leaf shape out of mine.” Her piece was pretty detailed, and thought out. Ella Dehart said, “I made a ball of clay, then I pressed my thumb in the middle, and warped it into a bowl.” While they both used their hands to make most of it, some people used other things to shape their pieces. Halyn Ballard said, “Mrs. D gave us tools to shape our clay, and so I used those.” Everyone had different ideas and techniques that they used to further customize their piece.
Everyone said that they have one or two things they learned from this experience and now have knowledge and skills that could be useful if they do this again. Ella Dehart was focused on details, she said, “I would want to make my name on the bottom look better because it was super messy. Evey Flagello already has a plan for when she does this again. She said, “I was planning to make a flower, but it was way too hard. I still think that would be cute, so I might find a way to do that next time.” Halyn Ballard said, “ I didn’t sand mine, so the glaze was chipping off. So I would go back and do that.” All the students had different ways to do their art, but it overall was a great experience for people in Mrs. D’s art class.
