The Boys golf team at Armuchee has greatly improved over the last few years, even having a great chance of making it to state this year. The team consists of 10 players where 6 play in each match. In the matches the teams take the top 4 scores on their team and then whoever has the lower total wins. So far this season they are 3-2 with a huge victory against Model in their third match of the season. This is much improvement to the season they had last year. The Coach said that he believes that they have a good chance to make state and even potentially win it.
Coy Abney is one of the members of the AHS golf team. He is a freshman that plays in the second slot for scores. This means that he is the second best player on the team. He said, “I play golf because I love the sport itself and I love competing while having fun.” Coy got into golf through seeing his friends playing and wanting to try it himself. He explained that he is overly happy that he made the decision to play golf over playing other sports like basketball and cross country. Coy said, “My favorite part of playing golf is the imagination you have to have to hit all of the different shots the course makes you hit throughout a whole round of golf.” He also explained that his dream course to play is St. Andrews, located in Scotland. This is his favorite course due to its layout, design, and the history behind it. Coy said, “My favorite club in my bag is 5 wood due to the fact that it is easy to hit and it goes a long way.” He also mentioned that he also really likes hitting his 4-iron too. Coy mostly uses Titleist branded golf balls because he likes the way they feel off the face and the control he has over the spin and ball flight. He said, “I mostly enjoy hitting a fade over a draw because I feel like I can control distance better with a fade.” He mentioned that he practices and plays every chance he gets because he wants to play the best he can at all times. Coy said, “If I could play a round with anybody in the whole world I would choose Min Woo Lee, Big Justice, and Jack Nicklaus.” He picked these people because he said they are his role models and he wants to be like them when he gets older.
Another player on the golf team is Slater Arrington. Slater is also a freshman. He plays in the third slot right behind Coy. Slater plays golf because he thinks it is very fun and he enjoys practicing with his friends that also play. He said, “I got into golf through my friends taking me to the range and I fell in love as soon as I touched a club.” Slater mentioned that his favorite part of playing golf is the beautiful sight you can see on the course and the peace it brings him while he’s there. “My dream course to play when I grow up is Pebble Beach in California. I want to play this course because it lies on the ocean and provides some of the most beautiful scenery any golf course has to offer.” He explained that his favorite club in the bag is his driver because he feels like he can shape the ball any way he wants and he can control it better than any other club. He uses Taylormade golf balls because he likes the players on tour that use them. Differing from Coy, Slater likes shaping the ball from right to left instead of hitting a fade because his swing suits hitting a draw. “I play golf every other day because I feel like it still gives me enough time to practice while still having a rest day in between.” Slater said his dream people to play with would be Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, and Garrett Clark.
Riley Millican is also a member of the AHS golf team. Riley is the only left handed golfer on the team but is still just as good as everyone else. He plays as the 4th player on the team behind Slater and Coy. Riley said, “I got into golf through my grandpa playing golf and him bringing me with him.” He explained that his favorite part of golf is hitting the ball as hard as he can and seeing the ball soar through the air. Riley said, “My favorite course that I would love to play is TPC Sawgrass, in Ponte Vedra, Florida.” He wants to play this course due to the fact that it has one of the best layouts out of any course in the whole world including some of the hardest holes in all of golf. Riley’s favorite club in his bag is driver because he likes hitting it far and the driver goes the furthest out of all of the clubs in a normal golf bag. Riley plays Taylormade golf balls because he also likes the people that use them on tour and he feels like they go further than any other ball that is for sale. He said, “I like hitting a draw more than a fade but sometimes the ball does whatever it wants and I have no control of it.” Riley plays golf as much as he can which is normally around three or five times a week including practice for the school. He said, “If I could play golf with anybody in the world they would be Rory Mcilroy, Tiger Woods, and Bryson Dechambaeu.” He explained that he picked them because they hit it further than mostly all of the other pro golfers.
The AHS boys golf team has a very bright future with all of the freshmen that are already some of the best on the team. The coach of the team also has very high expectations for his team for the end of this season and in years to come. He urges them as much as he can to practice as much as they can to optimize their skills to perform the best they can for the tournaments and matches they have during the golf season. He explained that the more that each player practices the more they will improve over the span of their high school career and potentially even in college or at the pro level.
