Last semester, Mrs. Mowery’s AP Psychology class had an exciting and interactive project, the sock baby project. For this project, students created a sock baby and took care of it for a week. They did this project from Monday, December 9th to Monday, December 16th. Over this week the students were required to take the sock baby with them everywhere, unless they had a qualified babysitter to take care of it. While taking care of their sock babies, they learned about the different stages of development. They also had to find solutions to conflicts that the child would have during each stage of development. Each day the child would grow more, going from birth to 18 years old by the end of the project.

Some students in this class described the sock baby project in their own words. Abby Drew Trotter, junior, said, “It’s basically like getting a sock with stuffing in it, putting a face on it, and taking care of it for a week.” Abby Drew also said, “Taking it around school was the worst part.” There were other students, like Prashie Patel, who said that they didn’t have a least favorite part. Each student enjoyed different parts of the project. Tessa Swanson, senior, said, “Making the sock baby was my favorite part.” This project also forced students to have more social interactions as they reported to their fellow classmates about their babies. Abby Drew said, “Showing each other our sock babies in class and talking to Mrs. Mowery about them was another favorite part of mine.”

This project helped many students to understand the responsibilities and what it takes to take care of a child as they grow up. Prashie Patel said, “I used to think that it was easy to take care of children, but this project really made me realize what it’s actually like.” Abby Drew said that one of the conflicts she had with her baby was that, “At one point my sock baby got drunk.” Others said that they didn’t have any conflicts with their babies. The sock baby project in Mrs. Mowery’s AP Psychology class was entertaining for students, and helped them learn a lot at the same time. Prashie Patel had a great time with this project. She said, “I really enjoyed taking care of my sock baby!”
