At Armuchee High School, the Student Workers Program allows determined students to help out around the school while learning important skills for future jobs. From the beginning of the first semester, these dedicated students work in the office or library during an open period. All the while, they ease the workload of the school staff, build relationships with their fellow students, and help create a stronger community.
The Student Workers Program is an important part of daily life at Armuchee High School for those planning their future careers. While learning important life skills, these students are setting up a future filled with success. One student worker in Mrs. Santos’ office, Sebastian Castro, said, “I learn a lot of good skills while working for Mrs. Santos, like how to get done helping one person to quickly move onto the next person.” Another benefit the Student Workers Program provides is learning valuable communication skills. Braden Therber, a library student worker, said, “It’s fun to form relationships with other students while helping out. I get to talk to my peers in a setting where they’re relying on me to get something done, and it pushes me to work harder to help them out.” Most importantly, students are taught how to manage time with the many tasks that must get done. Caroline Fletcher, who works in the library, said, “I’ve learned how to work with people of different ages, since we’re in a school of 6-12, including teachers. I’ve learned tasking elements too; I’m always either checking books back in, or helping a student with their chromebooks, and I’ve learned how to time manage that.” The ability to help fellow students and staff of all ages teaches the students part of the program how to communicate productively with their community, building stronger connections and making the people at Armuchee High School feel appreciated.
In both the office and library, there is a seemingly endless flow of work to be done. With the student workers helping out, the staff are able to get to the important things faster, while not having to worry about letting people into the office, giving out tardies, or managing chromebooks. Mrs. Santos, one of the admin assistants who works in the office, said, “The student workers here in the front office are so helpful in managing the window so I can take care of phone calls and in-house things.” Administrators and teachers alike value the students’ drive to help out whenever they can, no matter the task. However, no other staff member values the Student Workers more than Mrs. Stamey, the library director. Mrs. Stamey said, “They help me so much; I don’t know if I could do the books, the chromebooks, the checking out, and now the opening of the library doors alone without my student workers.” Not only is the program good for teaching students important skills, but with their help, administrators can focus on the students, once more proving Armuchee High School’s mission of We>Me.
By assisting administrators in their work, so that important jobs can get done, these student workers make certain that the staff can go through their days without as much stress as they would have otherwise. In addition, this wonderful program ensures that the juniors and seniors who take part in it are prepared for the workforce by teaching them valuable skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. It is clear to see, the student workers program allows Armuchee to be the best place it can be.
