One of our most influential figures at Armuchee High School is Mrs. Dexter. She’s there when we need her the most, and has had a massive impact on several of our students here. Delilah Dew, freshman, said, “I really like Mrs. Dexter because she’s so passionate about her job and good at it. She’s also very good at problem solving and always there when we need her.”
Mrs. Dexter has been working as a counselor for twelve years now. Mrs. Dexter gives her reason for wanting to become a counselor was and was surprised that she had a very personal answer to the question. She said, “One thing that motivated me to become a school counsleor was just how my school counsleor was there for me after I lost my father. My counselor really helped me to overcome his passing and was just very influential to me.” While there was always this for Mrs. Dexter the moment truly hit her after she graduated college and began her first teaching job. Working as a teacher’s assistant in Germany, she realized that being in the front of the class just wasn’t right for her, however working one on one with students greatly appealed to her.
When it comes to helping students, there’s really not much Mrs. Dexter can’t do. She said, “I’m usually able to help students with whatever they come to me with, whether it’s problems at home, something at school, or they just need someone to talk to. I do my best to help students socially, emotionally, and any mental health needs.” Mrs. Dexter may really come through as the backbone for some of our students here at AHS.
At Armuchee WE>ME is a huge part of our day to day schooling. It represents the good at Armuchee and that we should always treat others as more significant than ourselves and be of service in any way we can to others. Mrs. Dexter embodies this very saying with everything she does for students on a daily basis. Our principal, Mr. Pethel, said, “Mrs. Dexter is so focused on serving the needs of our students especially in the area of their mental health, she goes the extra mile every chance she gets. All in all we are so blessed to have Mrs. Dexter as our counsler here at Armuchee high school, she is the perfect example of we is greater than me.”
The very purpose of this article is to shine a light on Mrs. Dexter who won support staff of the year for 2024 at AHS. When asked about how she felt with receiving this title, she said, “I feel very honored to have been nominated by my colleagues for this great award.” Mrs. Dexter receiving this award came as not suprise to her fellow collegues. Mr. Pethel said, “I was not at all suprised to see that she had been given this award, I was very happy to know it was given to her, she deserves it.”
Mrs. Dexter loves being able to be there for all the students at AHS, in fact she says it’s her favorite part of her job. She said, “I love being able to help students and improve their relationships if they need advice as well as always just being a person they can trust if they ever need someone.” Truly an important roll for keeping the peace here at AHS, while also helping to better students should they need help.
AHS is so happy to have so many amazing teachers and staff here at the high school. They all care so much about us and Mrs. Dexter is one of the best. She will help you when you need it and is there when you are feeling down, and even though she has one of the toughest jobs here at Armuchee she is still able to help anyone she can.
