With the new additions to our school throughout the past few years, AHS has welcomed many new students and teachers because of the new buildings and grade levels that have been added. One of these new teachers is the familiar face of the beloved Mrs. Hulsey, a 6th and 7th grade math teacher here at AHS. Mrs. Hulsey has been teaching in the Armuchee community for the past 20 years and has recently moved to the high school campus alongside many middle school teachers and students. Mrs. Hulsey is a “personable, loving person that has such an amazing ability to connect with the students and her teammates” said Assistant Principal Nick Elliott.
Mrs. Hulsey has two children, one a current senior, Mallory, and the other a 2023 graduate, Harrison. Mrs. Hulsey’s children have grown up going to Armuchee and because of Harrison’s recent graduation and Mallory’s upcoming commencement, Mrs. Hulsey said, “They’re ready, but [she’s] not ready.” With these new changes, there have been “many tears”. Mrs. Hulsey moved to the Armuchee community in high school. Mrs. Hulsey said she is “proud to still be in this close-knit community.” Mrs. Hulsey spent a year working in the marketing field, but she said it was an “unfulfilling job [she] knew wouldn’t last.” She then started her master’s program at Berry College in the field of education and knew it was her calling. Mrs. Hulsey said that although nothing about teaching is easy, it is a “rewarding profession.” Mrs. Hulsey’s originality shines brightly in her demeanor, vibe, and overall presence in her classroom. She “often talked about her love for food,” said Holden Fellows, a freshman.. Mrs. Hulsey said,” I spend the most amount of money at Chick-fil-A” and I love the Honey Pepper Pimento Chicken Sandwich.
Both current and past students think of Mrs. Hulsey as being their favorite teacher. “She really does care about her students,” said Assistant Principal Nick Elliott. Most people will remember her as a social studies teacher who let her students play with Play-Doh and make snakes and snails,” said Holden Fellows. Not only has Mrs. Hulsey welcomed the experience of working in a new building, she has also taken on the new experience of being a math teacher. Due to the requirements of middle school standards, a middle school math class is 100 minutes.” With the challenges of being a math teacher, Mrs. Hulsey said she would one day like to go back to being a social studies teacher in the future. “Mrs. Hulsey is always doing little games and challenges and always making it fun,” said Gabby, a 6th grader in Mrs. Hulsey’s class. Mrs. Hulsey’s fun games often include original and helpful projects, hands-on experiences, or any other activities that contribute to her teaching method of using a good story that can relate to the standard being taught. Mrs. Hulsey taught her iconic lesson of economy using natural resources such as Play-Doh.
Mrs. Hulsey said that she loves being at the high school. Even with the challenges of moving into a new building, teaching a new subject, and meeting new co-workers, she said the high school is very laid back. Not only does Mrs. Hulsey feel at home despite being in a different building, but most of her students feel the same. Gabby said being at the high school feels “new but great, and there are so many nice people here.” However, some students have a different viewpoint. Ben, a 6th-grade student of Mrs. Hulsey said that his least favorite part of being a 6th grader in high school is walking in a line and not being able to use the vending machines.
Even with the change in location , Mrs. Hughes, who has worked with Hulsey at AES, said, “Mrs. Hulsey is still someone who is always willing to help show me how to do stuff or advise me how to handle a situation with a positive willing attitude.” Mrs. Hulsey provides an environment in her classroom that makes her students feel self-paced, and very hard to get behind in. Many students often voice their positive opinions about Mrs. Hulsey. Mr. Elliott even said, “My own child loved that she was fair and expected everyone to do well.” No matter the building she’s in or the subject she teaches, the students and staff of Armuchee High are so glad to have Mrs. Hulsey on staff.
