At Armuchee High School, students have various hobbies and interests that they enjoy. There are a variety of hobbies that students enjoy inside and outside of school. AHS students are very talented and they love to use their talents in the things they find interesting. Briley Mullinax, sophomore, enjoys sewing. She said, “Sewing helps to calm me down and it helps me focus.” Instead of creating new crafts, Briley fixes and mends holes in clothing. She has been sewing ever since she was little when her grandmother taught her how to sew.
Another example of a calming hobby is sophomore Olivia Casey’s love for reading. Reading is also a great way to learn and get your brain working. Olivia said, “My vocabulary definitely gets bigger and better when I read.” Reading is important because it helps to grow your brain and enhance your knowledge. Olivia enjoys reading as an escape. For her, it can be a way to destress and take a break from the business of life. Some of her favorite books include a Court of Thorns and Roses, The Cruel Prince, and any short romance books.
Ava Lee, a sophomore, loves many activities like hiking at The Pocket, running, drawing and baking. Her favorite hobby she does is baking. Ava said, “When I was little me and my mom used to bake new desserts a lot, over the summer during my free time I found interest in baking again.” She enjoys baking and seeing all the hard work put into the recipe turn into something tasty. Baking is a good hobby to show creativity in because you can experiment with new and different flavors and decorations. Two of Ava’s favorite things to bake are cakes and cookies. She would like to start another hobby and try something new like learning the piano.
Many students at AHS take part in physical activities and enjoy moving their bodies. Mannu Singh, a Junior, enjoys running, weightlifting, and reading. He found out he had a lot of potential in weightlifting in 8th grade when he enrolled in his first weightlifting class. Mannu likes to workout and lift weights with friends and family. He said, “People motivate me to do my hobby. I like to workout with other people since they can push me beyond my comfort zone.” Mannu shows us that having other people to hold you accountable and push you is important in many aspects in life. Another hobby that Mannu would like to try is cooking and learning to become better at it.
Evey Flagello, a Freshman, loves to bake, read, play tennis, and dance. She plays tennis for AHS and dances at Rome Civic Ballet. Evey said, “I was introduced to dance by my family when I was little.” She has now been dancing for 11 years. After being introduced to tennis by her PE coach she has been playing for 3 years now. Evey has developed many skills through both dance and tennis. Those skills include strength, endurance, discipline, and time management. She would possibly like to try volleyball or running.
