Mrs. Timberlake is one of the new teachers this year in the science department at AHS, teaching honors, AP, and regular biology. In her classes, her students participate in a lot of interactive activities to further enhance their understanding. Bayleigh Fortenberry, freshman, said, “Mrs. Timberlake is really nice and supportive as a teacher which helps me understand what we are learning.” Mrs. Timberlake is very passionate about her job and wants to help her students comprehend the curriculum.
Her main goal as a teacher this year for her biology students is to provide them with a more hands-on experience, which started off with a microscopes lab. They used microscopes in order to see different types of cells and protists. In addition to being a fun activity for the students, it has a purpose. Sophia Gulledge, sophomore, said, “I liked how I got to work with other students and learn how to use the microscope, so that we could see organisms and try to figure out what they were.” Timberlake is very organized in the work she plans for her students, ensuring that they will gain knowledge from each assignment.
Mrs. Timberlake wanted to become a teacher so that she can help students discover the importance of science, especially in their everyday lives. Timberlake said, “I like to include a variety of activities and methods to be able to reach every type of learner.” Her teaching style is very beneficial to her students, especially people who learn differently, like auditory and hands-on learners, so that they are able to understand what they are learning in class. Tori Vitello, junior, said, “I like how Mrs. Timberlake is very organized with her material so I know exactly what we’re talking about. I also like how she does a lot of labs because I’m definitely a visual learner.” By teaching this way, her AP biology students are able to prepare for the AP exam in May. Mrs Timberlake makes sure that every student in her class is able to comprehend the material. Adalyn Smith, freshman, said, “She gives you multiple handouts that have all the information you need, which is nice when preparing for tests.” With all of the assignments Mrs. Timberlake provides for her students, it helps them grasp what they’re doing in class.
Mrs. Timberlake earned her Bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Field Biology from Shorter University, then her Masters from the University of West Georgia. Previously, she taught science at the Floyd County College and Career Academy, Rome High School, as well as Coosa High School. Additionally, Timberlake also played soccer and lacrosse for Shorter. Mrs. Timberlake is excited to be a part of the Armuchee tribe this year and said, “I want to raise my family as part of the community.” In her free time, she likes to spend time with her husband and daughters, attend football games, read, and coach soccer.
Aside from being a biology teacher, Mrs. Timberlake is also the AHS girls soccer coach. Timberlake has been playing soccer since she was seven years old, which played a large role in why she wanted to coach soccer. Timberlake said, “I enjoy the sport and teaching other kids how to become better soccer players.” Mrs. Timberlake likes to work on her players’ tactical skills, as well as increasing their stamina. Isabel Martinez, freshman, said, “I’m looking forward to having her as a coach and seeing what she has planned for my teammates and me.” Mrs. Timberlake is a wonderful addition to the Armuchee family and her students can’t wait to see what this year will bring.
